Subjective aspect improvement of television pictures
by spatio-temporal processing

Jacques WEISS

Thesis passed on march, 29 1988

Abstract :

Current development of audiovisual in every day life and enhancement allowed by technical capabilities bring people to be still more exacting on quality and comfort of services.

Television pictures are altered by some minor defects introduced by the video transmission mode; as field scan frequency, actually 50 Hz in Europe, becomes insufficient in regard to viewing conditions (large screen, high intensity and contrast, ...), it has to be increased to 100 Hz in order to allow temporal filtering by the human visual system.

Such enlargement of the video bandwidth inside the TV receiver allows conversions of the scanning structure (progressive or interlaced scanning).

The treatment applied to the current pixel is defined by the motion information which is determined by inter and intra frame detection. The comparison of studied structures involves objective criteria (spatio-temporal spectrum analysis, for example) and subjective appreciation of pictures obtained by computer simulation.
